Station 2: Giotto and the city of Padova in the
14th century
This
is a fully interactive station with texts in Italian and English, mainly
spoken, on the city of Padova as it was in the 14th century, the history
of the Chapel, and Giotto and his work.
Immerse yourselves in the city as it was so long ago:
The Vision of Aegidius (Giles): follow the Angel, described by the chronicler
Giovanni da Nono in the first half of the 14th century, in an imaginary
guided tour, and discover what the city was like 700 years ago, with its
gates and bridges.
The Procession: follow the old route of the people who, every year on
the Feast of the Annunciation (March 25), walked through the streets of
the city.
The music which accompanied this ceremony could be heard in many parts
of the town: see where music was composed, listened to, and taught to
others.
Music was an important part of 14th-century life, and this part shows
you in which frescoes it is clear that the personages depicted were
listening to it.
Visit 14th-century Padova: discover the history and artistic masterpieces
housed in the city monuments which, in Giottos century, made Padova
the most highly decorated city in Italy.
Two itineraries are devoted to Giotto himself:
A film, in two languages, on the life of the master, so that you can
familiarize yourselves immediately with this great Florentine artist,
the initiator of modern painting, who executed his best work here in Padova.
Click on the map of Italy, to find out where Giotto painted other works
during his full and active career.
