Expression and sentiment in Giottos work
A
series of close-up projections of faces shows the many expressive nuances
which are so typical of the personages depicted in Giottos frescoes.
This
is another absolutely innovative aspect of his painting: his immense capacity
for expressing feelings, emotions, and states of mind. The film is made
up of three short sequences, following various moments in Giottos
narration: the story of Joachim, from his grief atbeing banished from
the temple, to his joy on meeting Anne; the drama of Mary, from the Annunciation
to the death of her son; and the story of Christ, from his betrayal by
Judas to the Resurrection.
